Clark Construction Group, LLC

Several years ago, in response to the lack of training and development programs for small businesses in the construction industry, Clark developed the “Strategic Partnership Program.” The Program is designed to supplement the capabilities of local, small and/or disadvantaged businesses. It is structured in an interactive format, with a focus on providing core construction management and business skills to its participants. Courses are taught by Clark and local industry experts, which include classroom learning, team projects, as well as presentations by the students. Clark is the only general contracting firm in the Country that sponsors such a MBA-style program.

The impact on the companies that participate is profound. The Strategic Partnership Program creates a learning environment in which employees and subcontractors participate in high-quality educational experiences, both in technical training and personal development that enable them to meet their professional aspirations. Most of the technical training focuses on construction industry subjects, and management and leadership training focus on how it can be applied in the construction industry. The faculty includes a mix of senior Clark employees including Clark's Director of Purchasing, Kwaku Gyabaah, and outside instructors. Employee faculty members attend a “train the trainer” class to ensure they have the public speaking, organizational and educational training necessary to facilitate a class. The participation of employees in the Strategic Partnership Program ensures that they share their vast background of construction knowledge with others and take part in the vision of helping businesses build capacity, and succeed in today's competitive environment.

National Eisenhower Award for Excellence

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) selected Clark Construction Group as the national winner of the 2013 Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence, Construction Category. This award, which is the highest recognition of its kind given by the SBA, recognizes large prime contractors who have excelled in their utilization of small businesses as suppliers and subcontractors. Clark received the award during the SBA's National Small Business Week celebration in Washington, D.C. Since 2007, Clark has awarded nearly $2 billion of contracts to hundreds of small businesses. In addition to Clark's consistency in meeting or exceeding Project Subcontracting Goals, Clark was selected based on its consistent efforts in identifying ways for small businesses to increase their capacity and gain access to useful business and industry resources. These efforts include Clark's Strategic Partnership (SPP), a 10-month executive MBA-style program to help small business owners and executives improve their construction management and business skills, as well as the company's formal and informal mentor/protege arrangements. In 2012, the company mentored four small businesses through GSA's Mentor-Protege Program and two in the Veterans Affairs Mentor-Protege Program.
